I’m changing. It’s somehow simultaneously exhilarating and terrifying; but the best part is the relief. If you’ve ever gone against the grain for a long time, you know how it feels to suddenly find your way back into the groove again after being off kilter and, quite frankly, a bit wobbly. You start a unraveling. You start noticing. You start finding yourself again and falling in love with the parts of you that you haven’t seen in a while.
Who am I again? I am Brett Bejcek. I live by my top values of Exploration, Iteration, and Connection. Exploration is what I do; I do it through iteration; and I do it to create more connection. I am prioritizing physical health, building community, and cultivating creativity.
Fun Metrics. A peek into my life: some tied to goals, others just for fun. Because I’m not a business, I’m a silly human. And silly humans sometimes spend 30 minutes comparing pastries consumed instead of finishing their to-do list.

What’s top of mind?
I’ve been thinking from a macro level and assessing what I’ve gotten right and wrong about my life. I have spent 31 years being the biggest proponent of delayed gratification (always doing things harder now for betterment of my future self): living in Brooklyn to save money, working 80+ hour work weeks now so in the future I can work less, running a 5k even when my body says no.
Not to say that this is bad, heck in the marshmallow test delayed gratification is correlated with better life outcomes. But what if you NEVER eat the marshmallow?
I’ve come to realize that you are never that future person. You are your present self. You have to take time in your present self to reap the rewards of your past self.
I’ve been investigating how it would look to switch my life up a bit with a greater focus on enjoying the present:
- What if I moved to Manhattan to be closer to my life there? (gym, sauna, work, friends, transit)
- What if I joined a social club as a way to have a 3rd space?
- What if I took lessons (singing, guitar, sewing, etc)?
Of course, in the midst of change, my tendency is to try to do too much all at once and then crumble a bit as I can’t keep up with it. I’m not rushing into any of these changes nor even saying I will do a single one of them.
I am saying my theme of this next year is to be present (and not just aware of my surroundings but actually thanking my past self for all the hard work he has put in and enjoying the moment).
Fun lil’ memories

a new lil look 👀🎂

Highlights of December:
- Falling in love with the parts of myself I missed. I alluded to this in the intro, but I missed myself these past few years. I missed my levity, my thoughtfulness, my curiosity, my peace, and my sense of purpose. I have not found all of myself that I lost but I have found a lot. It’s good to have him back.
- Buying a Nintendo Switch 2. On a lighter note, I am officially a gaymer. What the heck? I don’t game. Well now I do. It’s silly and frivolous and radically unproductive. It doesn’t make me a better version of myself, yet I am enjoying every second of it. I am leaning into that enjoyment.
- Ringing in the new year a little differently. As the clock struck midnight, my body shivered. I found myself with my best friends Dalton + Jess (and a third mystery person whose name I will never know) in a cold plunge doing a breath work session with 200 other people. Yes, it is giving cult, but being so in tune with my body and my intentions was the perfect way to kick off the year. The intention that kept coming to mind was stabilize. I’ve been running a marathon for years, out of fumes, and honestly a ghost of my past self. This year I am going to stop running so that I can walk. It’s that relief I mentioned earlier. Instead of speed and quantity, my aim is thoughtfulness and quality.
Lowlight of December:
When I ask people’s highs and lows and they say “I don’t have a low” it’s a personal pet peeve. I believe it stems from a lack of vulnerability/trust, an inability to process negative emotions, or a belief that you have to carry burdens alone. I believe this because I used to be one of those people: a victim of toxic positivity. By pure mathematical standards if there is a high, there has to be a low. That’s just how it works.
I was going to say I don’t have a low. After all, I am the healthiest and happiest I have been (possibly ever?!?). But I caught myself. My low is that I struggle with loneliness. I avoid processing that emotion and sitting with it because I am embarrassed by it. I tend to shove it into a dark corner because I am ashamed of it.
It’s a weird and conflicting feeling to be honest. I look at my past month and had plans every evening. I saw the people and friends I care about so deeply and there is SO much love there. But I can’t help sitting with this feeling of wanting a more “open door” lifestyle. Where friends are flowing in and out of my home (no planning ahead necessary) and sharing in community together.
Maybe that’s filled by a partner? Maybe that’s filled by an open invite recurring Saturday hack session at my place? Maybe that’s filled by uprooting my life and focusing on communal living? Who knows.
To be honest, this is the first time I am actually allowing myself to process this and it’s rather raw and unpolished. I don’t have answers and I don’t even know if there are actionable steps; but I just wanted to share with you. ✨ It goes against every fibre of my being not to wrap this up in a neat little bow with some grandiose takeaway, but alas, I am challenging my past (and current self) to just share my process with you without any finished conclusion. Thanks for being part of my journey 🙂.

On the first of every month I do a little self-audit and put it out into the world. Why? Accountability, reflection, and because life’s more fun when you share the messy middle.
